Why I’m writing this

Most Resolume tutorials teach Advanced Output as a settings panel — screen size, position, edge blend. That’s accurate, but it’s not what actually determines whether a 6+1 output show goes well or badly. After 14+ years running live visuals, including full concert productions with six-plus physical outputs, the real lessons came from what went wrong, not what the manual said.

The gap between the manual and the venue

A venue rider will tell you projector count, throw distance, and sometimes resolution. It will almost never tell you that two of those projectors are a different model than the other four, running slightly different native resolutions, or that the venue’s power distribution puts your media server on a different circuit than the projectors — which matters more than people expect during a long show.

How I actually organize a 6+1 rig

Six outputs plus one confidence monitor sounds like a scaling problem, but the real work is organizational, not technical:

• Every output gets a clear naming convention before the composition is built — not after
• I keep a backup composition with a simplified output profile, ready to swap in if one display fails mid-show
• Edge blending gets tested at full show brightness, in the actual venue lighting conditions — not at soundcheck brightness with house lights on
• I never trust a venue’s stated projector resolution until I’ve confirmed it myself, on site

The mistake I made early on

On one of my earlier large shows, I built the entire composition around the venue’s stated specs without confirming on-site. Two projectors turned out to be a generation older than promised, with a visibly different color temperature. I didn’t have a color-correction step built into my workflow at the time — I do now, on every multi-display show, regardless of how confident I am in the venue’s information.

What changed my approach permanently

After enough of these shows, I stopped thinking about Advanced Output as a Resolume feature and started thinking about it as a production discipline — the software is the easy part.
