Most VJs never touch them, because visuals and lighting have historically been separate jobs run by separate people. But after five years training VJs and AV technicians directly, I’ve watched this separation become less common — clients increasingly want one system, sometimes one operator, handling both.

Where almost everyone gets stuck first

What I Learned Running 6+1 Output Resolume Shows for Concerts

It’s not the concept of DMX that trips people up — it’s fixture addressing. Every student I’ve trained hits the same wall: fixture profiles set up incorrectly, universes mismatched, and a light that either doesn’t respond or responds to the wrong cue. This isn’t a Resolume problem specifically — it’s a lighting-fundamentals gap that most visual artists never had a reason to close before.

Live control vs. pre-programmed cues — my honest take

I get asked constantly whether to run DMX live alongside visuals, or pre-program everything in a lighting visualizer beforehand. My honest answer: for anything beyond a small show, pre-program it. Live DMX control alongside live visuals means you’re operating two systems under pressure at once. A visualizer lets you build, test, and lock lighting cues before a single fixture is powered on — and on the shows where I’ve had lighting design double as visual sync, this is the difference between a clean cue-to-cue show and a visibly reactive, slightly-behind one.

What actually makes this workflow professional

Fixture profiles verified before showtime, not assumed correct because the venue provided them

Cues tested in the visualizer against the exact rig being used, not a generic template

A clear trigger method — the same interface driving your visuals should drive your lighting cues, not two disconnected systems running in parallel

Who this actually matters for

If you’re a VJ who only ever runs visuals, this may never come up. But if you work corporate events, festivals, or any show where the client expects integrated production, DMX/ArtNet fluency is quietly becoming a baseline expectation — not a specialty skill. It’s the exact gap I built the DMX/ArtNet section of Advanced Outputs & Mapping — Resolume Arena to close.

Enroll: Advanced Outputs & Mapping — Resolume Arena — https://studio-z.ca/all-courses/resolume-arena-advanced-outputs-mapping/ (short: tinyurl.com/resolumeMapping)

Why VJs avoid DMX — and why that’s a mistake DMX and ArtNet come from the lighting world.
